CDMA
Stands for ‘Code Division Multi Access’, and is a common telecommunication standard used by a GPS device to communicate with a GPS satellite.

FM transmitter
A GPS is able to send its voice directions via standard FM radio. The device will have a set frequency, so all you need to do is tune your car radio into that frequency to hear the directions over your car stereo.
GPS signal
Your GPS handset needs to be able to connect to 3 GPS satellites in order to calculate your position. The signal needs a line of sight to the satellite, which is why GPS signals sometimes drop out temporarily as line of sight is lost and must be reacquired.

GPS maps and services include a huge range of pre-set locations, known as points of interest. These range from the useful, such as petrol stations, police stations, hospitals and hotels, though to comprehensive entertainment venues like restaurants and cinemas. Famous landmarks are commonly included, as well as scenic locations.
Safety alert
Depending on the service your GPS uses, real-time updates are sent to the GPS device covering accident reports as well as location-specific guidance covering speed limits around schools and other public places. Can include road works info and other events that are relevant to your journey.
Social networking
Many devices include software that connects you and your friends, showing where they are in real-time by tracking their GPS location, should it be switched on.
